i think lynch films have way more to them than even he realizes. he said his films are inspired by dreams so i think they are like direct streams from his subconscious that have loads of hidden meaning that even he doesnt fully understand.
his more narratively fractured films, like the dissociative fugue styled lost highway, or mulholland drive definitely demand you try to make some sense of it, but yeah i mean that’s the nature of the whole dream-like films. it’s left intentionally open for discussion. i just think some of his films like eraserhead which is just pure mood, or blue velvet which is probably the best fusion of a straight film but with all of his stylistic trademarks don’t require you do backflips in the shower of your psyche to appreciate. also yeah, the first thing you said was kind of my point, like lynch isn’t an intellectual. he’s a very raw and intuitive kind of creator, and while generating discussion is good and the hallmark of good movies, for people to insist or try too hard to ascribe meaning to his movies when you don’t need to, to appreciate it is silly and i guess that’s the point i was trying to make.
